A man has died after being swept into the ocean at Cape Schanck on Anzac Day. Emergency crews launched a search, but the man could not be revived.

CAPE SCHANCK – 25 April 2025
A man has died after being swept into the ocean while walking near the rock platforms at Cape Schanck on Anzac Day morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene just before 9:45am following reports that a man had been washed off the rocks and into the water near a popular walking and sightseeing area along Boneo Road.

Police, paramedics, and rescue crews, including Victoria Police’s Air Wing, launched an urgent search. The man was located unresponsive in the water by the Air Wing and brought to shore. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was unable to be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man’s identity has not yet been released. It is understood he was visiting the area, which is known for its striking coastal cliffs, powerful surf and unpredictable weather conditions. At the time of the incident, the ocean was reportedly rough, with large waves crashing against the rocks.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Victoria Police have reminded the public to exercise extreme caution around the area’s rock shelves and coastal tracks, particularly during periods of high swell or poor weather conditions.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
