Letter to the Editor: Peta Murphy’s Legacy

Anne Kruger, Rye

Reports regarding the gaming reforms championed by the late Dunkley MP Peta Murphy are increasing.

Known for her leadership and bipartisan approach, Murphy led a landmark parliamentary inquiry that recommended a total ban on gambling advertisements. Her successor, Jodie Belyea, has supported these reforms, but progress has been slow.

Critics cite lobbying by broadcasters, the AFL, and the NRL as weakening government resolve, raising concerns that Murphy’s vision is being sidelined.

Murphy’s determination to tackle gambling-related harms earned her widespread respect. However, without decisive government action, her groundbreaking work risks being undermined, leaving her legacy uncertain.

Advocates urge the government to honour her vision by prioritising public welfare over industry interests.
