An 18-year-old learner driver from Clyde North has been apprehended after allegedly driving unaccompanied at 200 km/h in Cranbourne North during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Casey Highway Patrol officers observed two vehicles allegedly racing along Thompsons Road at approximately 1:00 am. One of the vehicles, a blue Volkswagen Golf R, was detected travelling at 200 km/h—more than double the posted 80 km/h speed limit. The driver allegedly turned off his headlights and attempted to evade police, but was found shortly after on a nearby street while exiting the vehicle.
The young man’s vehicle has been impounded for 30 days, attracting a fee of $1,138.10. He is expected to be charged on summons with multiple offences, including:
- Exceeding the speed limit
- Participating in an unlawful street race
- Driving unaccompanied as a learner
- Failing to use headlights at night
Authorities are continuing investigations to identify the driver of the second vehicle involved in the incident.
