Shark Sighting Reported Near Rye Pier

A shark sighting near Rye Pier has been reported by swimmers after a large fin surfaced close to shore. The animal later swam toward the pier, prompting swimmers to return to shore and warn others.

A shark sighting has been reported off Rye, near Rye Pier, with swimmers saying a large fin surfaced about 10 metres from them before the animal swam parallel to shore.

The report was logged on Dorsal – Victorian Shark Reports at 10.00am on Tuesday 11 February 2026, listed as “unknown” species and “unspecified length”. It states one shark was seen about 40 metres from shore, with the sighting described as “from water”.

Two of us were swimming in neck deep water right side of Rye Pier. Large fin appeared approximately 10 metres from us and stayed above water for a few seconds. The disappeared and then reappeared. Shark swam parallel to shore toward the pier. We swam to shore and warned others.
