MPSC Sets Sights on Safer and Stronger Infrastructure Across the Peninsula

Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has unveiled a new infrastructure program focusing on safer roads, renewed community facilities, and stronger coastal defences to prepare the region for future growth.

Mornington Peninsula, Vic — Roads, community halls, drainage, and coastal facilities are set for major attention under a new push by Mornington Peninsula Shire Council to modernise local infrastructure and better prepare the region for future growth.

The initiative, titled “Safer, Stronger and Future-Ready,” will guide how Council tackles everything from potholes and intersections to sports pavilions and public meeting spaces.

Putting safety first

A central plank of the program is improving road and pedestrian safety. Council says a significant increase in road maintenance spending will allow it to target high-use routes, while new pedestrian crossings and shared paths aim to make walking and cycling safer.

The strategy also draws on Federal and State funding programs, with Council looking to secure grants under the newly announced Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program. That scheme pools together previous road and bridge funding, making $200 million available annually to councils across Australia.

Beyond roads: halls, parks and drainage

The plan stretches well past transport. Local halls and recreation spaces are earmarked for upgrades to meet demand from growing populations and to support community groups who rely on them. Coastal and drainage works also feature strongly, with Council flagging the need to strengthen infrastructure against extreme weather and sea-level impacts.

Dollars and detail

Council’s 2025–26 Budget has already put money on the table — more than $50 million in capital works. Highlights include:

  • A major lift in road maintenance funding.
  • Footpath extensions in several townships.
  • Car park improvements at Canadian Bay.
  • Restoration of beach access at Birdrock.
  • Sporting upgrades such as skate park renewals and new netball courts.

The long-term Community Facilities Infrastructure Strategy (2024–2034) will act as the backbone for these works, ensuring investments balance safety, accessibility and community benefit.

Balancing ambition with cost

While the Shire has set a bold agenda, it concedes that rising building costs and competition for grant funding remain hurdles. Delivery will depend on partnerships with higher levels of government and careful phasing of projects.

Council has also pointed to the importance of community input, with residents encouraged to have their say on priorities.

Looking ahead

If all goes to plan, residents can expect to see works rolling out over the coming years — from smoother roads and safer crossings to revitalised halls and stronger coastal defences.

The Shire says the overall aim is simple: infrastructure that makes daily life safer, easier, and better prepared for the future.
