Landslide Destroys McCrae Home, Emergency Evacuations Ordered

McCrae, Mornington Peninsula – A shock landslide on Penny Lane in McCrae has destroyed a house, prompting emergency evacuations of the immediate area and road closures on Nepean Highway.

Emergency services responded to the collapse at approximately 9 a.m. on Tuesday. The house had been unoccupied since a minor landslide occurred last week, and geotechnical experts were actively monitoring the site. Despite precautionary measures, the structure slid down the slope, leaving one person hospitalised in stable condition.

The State Emergency Service (SES) evacuated six nearby properties as a precautionary measure, with some homes identified as vacant holiday residences. Utilities have been disconnected, and the Nepean Highway is closed between McCrae and Dromana. Authorities are urging motorists to use the Mornington Peninsula Freeway as an alternative route.

Tanina Osborne, a local resident, described hearing “an almighty tumble” before seeing the house slide down the hill. Witness Kim confirmed the house was “destroyed,” landing behind another property.

Emergency crews, including SES volunteers and fire units, remain on-site, assessing further risks as the slope may continue to shift. Authorities advise the public to avoid the area until further notice.

While no immediate threat exists to the nearby foreshore camping area, residents and visitors are advised to remain alert and report any signs of land movement. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the landslide and evaluate the stability of surrounding properties.
