Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has led the Australian Labor Party to a commanding victory in the 2025 federal election, securing a second term with an expanded majority. Labor is projected to hold at least 87 seats in the House of Representatives, surpassing the 76 needed for a majority and marking a significant gain from their previous term.
This election outcome is particularly notable as Albanese becomes the first Labor prime minister to be re-elected with an increased majority since the Federation in 1901. His campaign, emphasising unity and Australian values, resonated with voters amid global economic uncertainties and domestic challenges.
In a historic and unexpected development, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton lost his seat of Dickson to Labor candidate Ali France, making him the first federal opposition leader in Australian history to be unseated during a general election. Dutton’s campaign, which faced criticism for its alignment with former U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies and rhetoric, failed to gain traction with the electorate. The Liberal-National Coalition suffered a significant setback, with projections indicating they will hold only 39 seats – their lowest in decades.

The Australian Greens faced significant setbacks in the 2025 federal election, potentially losing several MPs, including party leader Adam Bandt. Early results showed Greens incumbents Max Chandler-Mather and Stephen Bates likely losing to Labor in Queensland, while Elizabeth Watson-Brown’s seat remained uncertain. Bandt’s Melbourne seat was on a knife-edge, facing a strong challenge from Labor’s Sarah Witty.
Despite the losses, the Greens saw promising results in Richmond, NSW, where Mandy Nolan may unseat Labor’s Justine Elliot, and in Wills, Melbourne, where Samantha Ratnam is narrowly trailing Labor MP Peter Khalil.
Dunkley Holds for Labor, Flinders Too Close to Call
In the Victorian seat of Dunkley, Labor’s Jodie Belyea successfully retained her position, reinforcing the party’s strength in Melbourne’s south-east. Belyea, who won the seat in a 2024 by-election following the passing of former MP Peta Murphy, managed to hold off a strong challenge from the Liberal Party, despite a notable swing towards the opposition.
Meanwhile, the contest in the Flinders electorate remains too close to call. Liberal incumbent Zoe McKenzie holds a narrow lead over independent candidate Ben Smith, with the final outcome pending the counting of remaining votes and preferences. The seat, encompassing parts of the Mornington Peninsula, has seen a significant challenge from Smith, reflecting a broader trend of independents gaining ground in traditional strongholds.

The 2025 federal election results signify a substantial shift in Australia’s political landscape, with Labor consolidating its position, the Liberal Party entering a period of introspection, and the Greens fighting for survival. As final votes are tallied, the complete composition of the new parliament is expected to shape the next chapter in Australian governance.
