Kananook Creek Association Slams Council’s Decision to Scrap Governance Group

The Kananook Creek Association (KCA) has voiced strong concerns over Frankston City Council’s decision to dissolve the Kananook Creek Governance Group.

In a press release made on social media, the Kananook Creek Association (KCA) has voiced strong concerns over Frankston City Council’s decision to dissolve the Kananook Creek Governance Group. The move, finalised during a Council meeting on 2 December 2024, has raised questions about transparency and the lack of community consultation from the group.

“We’re deeply disappointed by Frankston City Council’s decision to discontinue the Kananook Creek Governance Group. This decision, made by the new Council on Monday, 2 December 2024, reflects a concerning lack of transparency and consultation.”

The KCA said in their press release.

The KCA, a volunteer organisation with a 50-year history of environmental advocacy, has been instrumental in transforming Kananook Creek into a healthier waterway. However, key challenges such as silt accumulation, unfinished community projects, and outdated management plans remain pressing issues for the creek’s long-term viability.

The Kananook Creek Governance Group, formed as a result of a 2016 Ministerial Advisory Committee Review and adopted by Council in 2020, was actively working to address these concerns. The KCA argues that shifting the group’s responsibilities to the Foreshore Advisory Committee fails to address the specific needs of Kananook Creek and risks neglecting its ongoing challenges.

“Council’s proposal to incorporate the group’s workload into the Foreshore Advisory Committee is not in the best interests of the community. The responsibilities of these two groups do not overlap, and the Foreshore Advisory Committee has no remit for Kananook Creek. This decision risks sidelining the unique challenges and aspirations associated with the creek’s health and future.”

Argues the KCA in the press release.

While disappointed by the Council’s decision, the KCA remains steadfast in its commitment to the creek’s future. The group has invited the community to a special general meeting in Seaford on 5 February 2025, where strategies for continued advocacy will be discussed.
