Independent Candidate Push for Flinders Ahead of 2025 Federal Election

Debbi de Lapps, spokesperson for the Independent for Flinders group, has declared that the electorate is ready for change ahead of next year’s federal election. Speaking on behalf of the group, Ms de Lapps highlighted growing dissatisfaction with major political parties and strong support for independent candidates across the Mornington Peninsula.

Ms de Lapps believes the success of independents in the national Parliament has inspired hope for a more representative and effective government. She said:

“People are very unhappy with the major parties and think that having somebody who’s independent and able to think for themselves is a really, really appealing prospect. And they do not see that the current crossbench are in any way ineffectual. They’ve had some great achievements. They’re very strong on pushing forward private members’ bills. They’ve had a lot of influence in getting bills amended, bringing extra perspectives to them. And I couldn’t rattle off a list of what they’ve done, but it’s available. You can see it. The teals are very effective.”

Ms de Lapps emphasised that the Independent for Flinders group is focused on bringing a fresh perspective to Parliament, echoing the successes of other independents in fostering change and representing their communities’ voices.
