Mornington Peninsula Mayor: “Higher Rate Cap Doesn’t Mean Higher Rates”

Mornington Peninsula Shire invites residents to shape budget priorities

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Anthony Marsh has assured residents that just because the Victorian Government has raised the council rate cap to 3 per cent, it doesn’t mean ratepayers will be hit with the full increase.

Speaking on RPP FM radio, Cr Marsh said the council’s priority will always be managing public money wisely.

“I’ve said for many years that a higher cap doesn’t mean we have to increase rates by 3 per cent,”

he said.

“No matter what the cap is, councils need to make sure their spending matches community expectations. That means being accountable for every dollar we spend.”

“We don’t just raise rates by the maximum amount and then look for ways to spend it. That’s not how we should be managing public funds, and it’s a view I’ve held for a long time.”

Have Your Say on Budget Priorities

In a push to make budgeting more transparent, the Shire is inviting residents to help shape its upcoming budget. Ratepayers can choose their top five priorities from 15 key areas that will guide how funds are allocated for projects and services.

The initiative is part of the council’s efforts to ensure spending reflects the community’s values and needs.
