Victoria Police Arrest Duo on Stolen Moped in Somerville

Two men were arrested in Somerville after an early morning police intercept involving a stolen moped, with the rider facing multiple charges and a court date at Frankston Magistrates Court.

According to Victoria Police, the nightshift crew from Somerville Highway Patrol spotted a moped carrying a pillion passenger travelling south along Hartnett Drive about 4.10 am on 30 November.

Officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, but police allege the rider continued on and ran a red light at the intersection of Klauer Street before crashing.

Rider allegedly continued after initial crash

Police said the rider then picked the moped up off the road and attempted to continue west along Klauer Street.

Second collision and foot chase

According to police, the rider mounted the kerb, collided with a wire boundary fence and still attempted to remount the moped.
A pursuing officer chased him on foot and arrested him a short time later.
The pillion passenger was arrested at the scene.

Police allege the moped was stolen.

Charges laid following incident

The rider, a 45-year-old Seaford man, has been charged with:

  • theft of a motor vehicle
  • careless driving
  • failing to stop on police direction
  • disobeying a traffic control signal
  • multiple other traffic offences

He has been bailed to appear at Frankston Magistrates’ Court on 9 January.

Passenger to be charged by summons

The passenger, a 48-year-old Carrum Downs man, will be charged by summons for failing to wear a helmet.
