Australian Sand Sculpting Championships return to Frankston Waterfront

The Australian Sand Sculpting Championships are returning to Frankston Waterfront, where 400 tonnes of sand will be transformed into large-scale sculptures, interactive attractions and family-friendly activities.

More than 400 tonnes of sand will transform Frankston Waterfront into a large-scale open-air gallery when the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships return later this month.

The event will run from Saturday 28 March to Sunday 26 April 2026 at McCombs Reserve, with this year’s theme, The Enchanted Realm, set to bring fairytale castles, dragons and mythical creatures to life.

Full exhibition ready from opening day

According to Frankston City Council, this year’s championships will feature 18 large-scale sculptures created across an intensive eight-day build period.

For the first time, every sculpture will be completed before opening day, allowing visitors to view the full exhibition as soon as the event opens.

The 2026 program will also include a 50-tonne centrepiece sculpture, a 25-tonne interactive sculpture for families and a 15-tonne entry installation welcoming visitors into the exhibition space.

Solo artists to compete for national title

Fifteen solo artists are set to compete for the Aidan J Graham Australian Champion title, including 10 Australian sculptors and five international contenders.

Frankston City Mayor Cr Sue Baker said the event would again bring energy to the waterfront and support the local economy.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships back to our city, bringing colour, creativity and energy to our waterfront and showcasing Frankston at its very best,” Mayor Baker said.

Mayor Baker said the event would help attract visitors, support local traders and strengthen Frankston’s position as a destination for major events.

Expanded program planned for visitors

Sandstorm Events founder and director Sharon Redmond said the championships would showcase high-level Australian and international talent against the backdrop of Frankston’s foreshore.

“We’re bringing together some of the finest sand sculptors from across Australia and around the world to create an immersive experience that truly transports visitors,” Ms Redmond said.

Beyond the sculptures, visitors will also be able to take part in sand sculpting workshops, explore a giant sand pit, play mini golf, create sand art, visit food trucks and take part in photo opportunities.

A special Easter weekend program is also planned, including an Easter egg hunt, along with the return of EastLink’s People’s Choice Award.

New additions for 2026 include live sculpture talks, interactive installations and an immersive light show sponsored by Govee.
