Frankston Council Clashes with State Government Over Roadside Grass Maintenance

Frankston City Council urges the state government to address overgrown grass in VicRoads-managed areas, highlighting safety concerns

Frankston City Council has intensified its dispute with the state government over the maintenance of roadside grass, with locals voicing frustration over overgrown vegetation in key areas.

RPPFM News reports that while the council adheres to a four-week mowing schedule for areas under its jurisdiction, many prominent locations, such as the Cranbourne-Frankston Road and Nepean Highway medians, fall under the responsibility of VicRoads.

The council argues that it is being unfairly criticised for overgrown grass in areas outside its control and has called on the state government to prioritise maintenance in these locations. Councillor David Asker raised the issue during a recent council meeting, stating:

“It’s now becoming, in my assessment, a safety issue.”

The overgrown grass not only impacts the city’s appearance but also raises safety concerns for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. The council has encouraged residents to report maintenance issues in council-managed areas through the Snap Send Solve app, while concerns about VicRoads-managed locations should be directed to the VicRoads website.

The ongoing dispute highlights broader tensions between local councils and state authorities over the division of maintenance responsibilities and the impact on community safety and aesthetics.
