Nazi symbols have been discovered painted on a street in Flinders township and defacing a local sculpture, prompting swift condemnation from Flinders MP Zoe McKenzie. Ms McKenzie labelled the graffiti as “totally unacceptable” and stated it has no place in Flinders or anywhere else in Australia. She referenced the Counter-Terrorism Amendment Act, which criminalises the public display of prohibited symbols, including those associated with Nazi ideology.
Under the legislation, it is an offence to display such symbols in circumstances likely to incite others to offend, insult, or intimidate individuals or groups.
“The symbols are not only abhorrent but a clear breach of this law,” Ms McKenzie stated.
The local MP has urged anyone with information about the graffiti to come forward, stressing the importance of community vigilance in rejecting acts of hate and intimidation.
Police are investigating the incident, and the graffiti has been removed. Community leaders and residents alike have expressed their shock and determination to ensure such incidents do not occur again.
