Drivers Reminded to Slow Down as Students Head Back to School

Children across the Mornington Peninsula will begin returning to school this week, with some schools resuming as early as Wednesday. Motorists are reminded that school speed zones are now back in force, and vigilance on the roads is critical to ensure the safety of young students.

School zones, which enforce reduced speed limits during drop-off and pick-up times, are designed to protect children as they travel to and from school. Drivers are urged to keep an eye out for children crossing roads, walking near schools, and boarding or disembarking from buses.

In a separate reminder posted on the official Eyewatch – Mornington Peninsula Police Service Facebook page, local police reinforced the importance of abiding by school zone speed limits:

“Attention all drivers, with schools back in session, school zone speed limits are now in effect. Please abide by the road signs, ensuring your speed is reduced in these zones. This isn’t just a courtesy, it’s the law and it will be enforced. Keeping our children safe as they journey to and from school is our shared responsibility. So let’s all do our part, and drive safely! Thank you.”

This call for caution echoes the shared responsibility of the community to protect young pedestrians. Authorities encourage all road users to exercise patience and prioritise safety over convenience during these critical times.
