Police Release Images After Alleged Sexual Assault on City-Bound Train

Victoria Police have released images of a man they believe may assist with enquiries after an 18-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted on a city-bound metropolitan train.

Victoria Police are appealing for public assistance to help identify a man after an 18-year-old woman was allegedly sexually assaulted on a city-bound metropolitan train last week.

Detectives from the Transit Crime Investigation Unit say the incident occurred on a city-bound Cranbourne line train between Dandenong Station and Hughesdale Station at about 6.05 pm on Tuesday, 13 January. Police allege the unknown man approached the woman inside the carriage and sexually assaulted her before leaving the train. He was reportedly seen boarding a bus on Waverley Road in Chadstone a short time later.

Investigators have released images of a person they believe could assist with enquiries. According to police descriptions, he is believed to be between 20 and 30 years old, with tanned skin, black curly hair and brown eyes.

Victoria Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or who recognises the man to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report via www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Victoria Police emphasise that unwanted sexual or anti-social behaviour on public transport can be reported through official channels. In non-urgent situations, members of the public can text STOPIT to 0499 455 455, which will connect them to an online form to provide details of the incident. For emergencies or crimes in progress, Triple Zero (000) should be called immediately.

Support and resources are available for people affected by sexual assault. Specialist services, including crisis counselling and support, can be accessed through dedicated lines such as the Sexual Assault Crisis Line Victoria and the national 1800RESPECT service.

Police say the public’s assistance could be critical in identifying the man of interest and advancing the investigation.
