‘Dragged 10 Metres’: Mornington Police Sergeant to Face Trial Over Somerville Incident

Mornington police sergeant Hayden Bodycomb will face trial in May 2026 over allegations he dragged a fellow officer 10 metres along the road during a traffic stop in Somerville in 2024.

A Mornington police sergeant accused of dragging a fellow officer along the road during a traffic stop in Somerville will face trial next year, after his case was delayed in the County Court.

Sergeant Hayden Bodycomb, 49, is facing serious criminal charges, including intentionally and recklessly exposing emergency workers to risk, conduct endangering persons, and resisting arrest.

The allegations stem from an incident on 4 October 2023, when Bodycomb was reportedly pulled over by officers in Somerville. Police allege that during the stop, he grabbed the arm of another officer and accelerated, dragging the officer for about 10 metres before letting go.

It’s also alleged that Bodycomb resisted arrest, was capsicum sprayed, and later taken to Frankston Hospital for a psychiatric assessment. He was subsequently taken into custody after attending Mornington Police Station by appointment.

Lawyer’s Schedule Pushes Trial to May 2026

Bodycomb’s trial was due to begin in the County Court on 20 October 2025, but defence lawyer Geoffrey Steward told the court he was committed to another case and could not appear.

Trial Pushed to 2026 After Lawyer Requests Adjournment

Judge Anne Hassan agreed to adjourn the matter, setting a new start date of 21 May 2026, warning that the case could not be pushed back again. Bodycomb appeared via video link and did not oppose the delay.

He remains on bail while awaiting trial.

Bodycomb was ordered to stand trial following a committal hearing in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in October last year.
