Sewage Spill Affects Sweetwater Creek and Frankston Beach

South East Water has reported a sewage spill at Frankston South, sending overflow into Sweetwater Creek and Frankston Beach. Residents are urged to avoid the water while clean up and water quality testing continue.

South East Water has reported a sewage spill at Fenton Crescent in Frankston South, with overflow entering Sweetwater Creek and reaching Frankston Beach.

In a public notice, the authority said the incident occurred on Friday 26 December and involved a blockage in the sewer network attributed to tree roots. The blockage caused sewage to overflow into the nearby creek, which flows out at Frankston Beach near the boat ramp.

Public urged to avoid water

As a precaution, South East Water is advising the community not to use or handle water in the affected section of Sweetwater Creek or downstream through to Frankston Beach until water quality tests are complete.

The warning applies to people and animals. Residents are being asked to avoid activities such as wading, swimming, or letting pets play in the water in the impacted area. Advisory signs are being installed along the creek and at Frankston Beach to alert the public.

Spill contained and clean up under way

South East Water says crews have contained the spill and are working to clear the tree roots that caused the blockage in the first place.

The utility has notified Environment Protection Authority Victoria about the incident and is undertaking clean up works in and around the creek and outfall area. Further updates are expected once water quality results are available.

South East Water has apologised to residents for the spill and for any smells or disruption caused.
