The Country Fire Authority (CFA) is urging caution with lithium-ion batteries following a recent e-bike explosion in Langwarrin.

The Country Fire Authority (CFA) is urging caution with lithium-ion batteries following a recent e-bike explosion in Langwarrin.

While packing for a camping trip, a local resident noticed their e-bike, stored in the garage, crackling and sparking. The quick-thinking individual contacted the Fire Brigade and removed their vehicle from the garage. Moments later, a fireball engulfed the space, causing extensive damage.

The CFA highlighted this incident as a reminder of the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, particularly when charging or storing items like e-bikes. They strongly recommend the following safety measures to prevent such occurrences:

  • Install interconnected smoke alarms for early warning.
  • Purchase devices and batteries from reputable manufacturers and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Charge larger items, such as e-bikes, in a shed or a space separate from the main home.
  • Never leave smaller items unattended while charging or place them on soft surfaces like beds, couches, or in hot vehicles.

The CFA is encouraging residents to familiarise themselves with safe charging and storage practices to reduce the risk of fires. For more safety tips and information, visit the CFA Victoria website.
