Bruce Nauman’s Neon Spiral to Illuminate Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery

A conceptual neon sign by renowned American artist Bruce Nauman is set to become the centrepiece of the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery (MPRG) for the next two years. The luminescent work, described as a neon spiral sign, is being loaned from the National Gallery of Australia (NGA), where it has been a standout piece in its collection.

Dr Nick Mitzevich, Director of the NGA, described the relocation as a significant cultural moment for the region.

“It’s a great achievement to bring this unique work to Mornington, offering the community the chance to engage with one of Nauman’s signature pieces,”

He said.

Bruce Nauman is internationally recognised for his use of neon in contemporary art, often exploring language and form through the medium’s vivid, glowing properties. His work is noted for challenging traditional boundaries and evoking new interpretations of space and communication.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Council Mayor Cr Anthony Marsh welcomed the initiative, noting the positive impact on the local arts scene.

The exhibition is expected to enhance MPRG’s offerings over the next two years, aligning with the gallery’s goal to present important works by influential international artists.
