A recent two-night operation by Moorabbin Highway Patrol officers on the Nepean Highway in Moorabbin resulted in 41 motorists being apprehended for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The operation, conducted on 13 and 14 March, involved three booze buses and targeted southbound lanes.
Over the course of the blitz, officers administered 4,747 preliminary breath tests, with 37 drivers returning positive alcohol results. Additionally, 36 preliminary oral fluid tests were conducted, leading to four positive detections for illicit substances. Notably, 11% of motorists tested for drugs yielded positive results.
Several drivers attempted to evade police testing sites but were intercepted and penalised. One motorist was found to be under the influence of both alcohol and drugs, leading to an immediate licence suspension and a forthcoming court summons. Another driver, who did not hold a valid licence, had their vehicle impounded and will face court proceedings.
Senior Sergeant Stuart Saunders of the Moorabbin Highway Patrol expressed frustration over the number of individuals endangering lives by driving under the influence. He emphasised that police will continue to conduct alcohol and drug testing anywhere, anytime, to reduce road trauma. He also warned that attempts to evade testing sites are futile, stating,
“Just know that if you are contemplating trying to elude us, we’ll be there waiting.”
This operation underscores the ongoing efforts of Victoria Police to enhance road safety and deter impaired driving through rigorous enforcement measures.
