Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association Women’s Grand Final

On Sunday, March 9th, the Somerville Women’s team played against Balnarring at The Nest in front of a massive crowd. Somerville earned the advantage of a home final by finishing second on the ladder, with Balnarring ending 4th after the home-and-away fixtures were completed.

Prior to the Grand Final, Somerville powered to a dominant victory in the semi, compiling 1/167, with young gun Lara Brittain (84*) and the experienced Julie Fearns (52*) posting a magnificent 119-run partnership. In reply, Rye struggled to a moderate total of 42.

In the other semi-final, highly fancied top team Tooradin was restricted to 8/109, and Balnarring defied their 4th ladder position to total 1/110.

Back to the Grand Final—Somerville batted first and found it difficult to get on top of a disciplined and accurate Balnarring attack. A total of 95 looked a little below expectations; however, valuable contributions were recorded by Julie Fearns (40), Tilly Black (15), and Marlee Black (11).

The Balnarring bowling unit of Jorja Gay (2/12), Kiarna Horseman (2/21), Liz Leerson (3/13), and Kelsey Perry (2/13) worked as a team, and the results came their way.

In reply, Balnarring showed maturity and composure at the crease and chipped away at the 96-run target. Jemma Reynolds stamped herself as one of the competition’s stars, compiling a match-winning 63* to go with her 69* in the semi-final. Dropped on 0, the adage “catches win matches” holds true in this case.

Congratulations to both teams, who played the match in great spirit and once again demonstrated that women’s cricket on the Peninsula is going from strength to strength.

The Somerville team comprised: Kasey Black (Co-Captain), Katelyn Van Loo (Co-Captain), Tilly Black, Lara Brittain, Marlee Black, Julie Fearns, Hayley Monk, Tahlia Love, Annie May Spence, Lacey Jeremiah, Christine Jeremiah, Kelly Burdett, and Nicole Love.
Coach: Jason “Jugga” Nagel.
